Provenance: Meldon Park
Meldon Park was designed in 1832 by the famous northern neo-classical architect John Dobson (1787-1865) for Isaac Coulson and completed in 1835.
In 1810 he went to London and became friends with the well-known architect Robert Smirke who designed the British Museum. Although Dobson eventually returned to Northumberland both architects continued to work in the neo-classical style.
The house characterised by its simple and austere neo-classical design, the most elaborate feature being the Ionic pillared entrance portico, is typical of Dobson’s work.
