A rare pair of very large 19th century Scottish cast iron revolving plant tables, made by McDowall, Steven & Co most probably for a conservatory, orangery or palm house. The design for these tables is illustrated in one of their catalogues titled ‘Section IV. Ornamental Castings & Constructional Work’
The two tables with segmented pierced panel tops, railed sides and filigree under edging, are supported by open scrolled brackets and a substantial socle. Circa 1880. Restored.
The Milton Works Glasgow was founded by John McDowall in 1834, the name later changed to McDowall, Steven Bros & Co in the late 1850s, and became one the most eminent and successful manufacturers of ironwork in the United Kingdom. In London the main outlet was No 4 Upper Thames Street, London EC4 and the company operated under the name Steven Bros & Co.
